…is me, Brett Foster - author (but not the subject) of the Blog, designer/builder of the Project, and designer/programmer of this website (among others).

As a child I dreamed of one day constructing my own dwelling. In those days my vision ran more towards a batcave or a space station. I spent a lot of time making Lego prototypes, elaborate architectural plans, scale models.

I still dream of constructing my own dwelling, but now the vision is a lot more practical. During the Ice Storm of 1998 I realized how vulnerable and dependent a typical home really is.

Since then I’ve been researching all of the different design elements which will be used in the Project. Some of the important goals are:

  • no reliance on fossil fuels whatsoever
  • minimal use of machinery during construction
  • minimal use of artificial materials due to chemical sensitivity
  • freely share the design and lessons learned during construction
