the Project

…is the construction of the Boy’s strawbale-insulated home, and the subject of the Blog.

However, the first step is construction of a strawbale-insulated outbuilding. The idea is to learn by starting small (hopefully the mistakes will be correspondingly small), and furthermore to produce an inexpensive useful structure on the building site.

Design elements of both the outbuilding and the main house include:

  • timber frame
  • strawbale wall insulation
  • natural plaster finish inside and out
  • metal roof with rainwater collection
  • earthen floor

Design goals for the outbuilding include:

  • maximize area allowed without a building permit
  • minimize custom sizing of bales

The eventual purpose of the outbuilding is to house the power equipment (batteries, inverter) and possibly have PV panels mounted on the roof.
